Our History

A group of concerned and caring Ashe Countians gathered in 1983 to discuss hunger in Ashe County and to provide assistance to those needing help in our community. Thus, The Ashe County Sharing Center was established. Hunger was the most pressing need, so an emergency food pantry was opened and began operating with 12 volunteers.

Today, The Ashe County Sharing Center has over 120 volunteers who believe in our mission: The Ashe County Sharing Center, Inc. is an ecumenical organization whose mission is to provide food for those in need throughout its extended community. On May 1st, 2016, the Ashe County Sharing Center relocated to 115 Colvard Street in Jefferson from our original location in downtown West Jefferson. This location is approximately four times the size of our old location. This location has allowed the Sharing Center to increase the amount of food we can store and distribute, expand services to food insecure children & aging senior populations. Through this location we can also offer initiatives to encourage improved health (screenings, shots, tests,), and offer seminars on financial management, cooking, healthcare, and many others.

The Ashe County Sharing Center is supported by donations and grants from businesses and foundations, churches, schools and individuals. As with any food pantry, we depend on the public’s continued support in the forms of time, money, and food. With your help much has been done to alleviate hunger in Ashe County – much remains to be done as we continue our participation in our community’s needs.
